Sacred Sweat Lodge Ceremony

 

Yesterday I was with the women I teach at John Volken Academy
in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction
in sacred Sweat Lodge ceremony.

The Sweat Lodge, pictured partly unfinished above, is connected to Phoenix Society located in Surrey, BC, and was built in partnership with their residents and aboriginal Elders, Old Hands, and Alannah Atley (Wise Woman).

It is on the Raven Healing Grounds at the rear of the Phoenix Centre property under tall evergreen trees.

I had difficulty getting there with some unexpected road closures, and felt emotional before and at the beginning of the teachings, but am so glad I was able to participate in this insightful, heartfelt ceremony.

A Door To Everything Society is a group of women that came together just over two years ago, concerned about the addiction issues young people face with drugs and alcohol nowadays.

On the board of the Society are Jayne De’Ath, Linda Marshall, Kim VanSickle and me, Kathleen Willis.

What we found was the more we met as a circle to discuss our own issues, along with a forgiving attitude, the more our purpose as a Society became apparent. [Read more…]

Thank you Rose Hamilton, centre in the green sweater, for your very informative talk about SOS Children’s Village, their history, and what it’s like to be a foster child in British Columbia today.

Thank you, also, to Karen McKee of Warm Buddy for the adorable warm-up polar bears that are going to the foster youth at SOS along with the Christmas stockings the students of John Volken Academy made.
